St. Lucia: The Hawaii of The Caribbean

Located about 26 miles northeast of St. Vincent, and 21 miles south of Martinique, St. Lucia sits half way down in the Eastern Caribbean and is known for its natural beauty and diverse landscape. St. Lucia is known as the "Hawaii of the Caribbean", and boasts incredible sights, such as the Piton Mountains, a World Heritage Site, lush and tropical rain forests, as well as a drive-in volcano.

Voted "The World's Leading Honeymoon Destination"

There are few honeymoon destinations in the Caribbean or in the world for that matter, that have been voted “The World’s Leading Honeymoon Destination” eight years in a row by the World Travel Awards. St. Lucia offers romance, relaxation, culture, adventure, and vibrant shopping and commerce like no other honeymoon location.

A Perfect Spot for Adventure and Natural Beauty

St. Lucia offers so many options for the adventure traveler, and the nature lover. You can hike and tour the famous Piton Mountains, Zip line or ride through lush and tropical rain forests, Drive into an active volcano, relax and rejuvenate in the hot Sulphur Springs baths, Stroll among botanical gardens, or snorkel and scuba dive along a Coral Reef. Your choices are endless!

Culture and History:

St. Lucia’s culture has been shaped by a blend of African, Caribbean, Spanish, British, French, and even Indian influence throughout its history. St. Lucia was strongly contested and fought over by both the British and French, changing governments 14 times, before finally having peace. There are many historical remnants left behind such as the famous Vieux Fort, Fort Rodney with incredible views of Rodney Bay, and the Le Pavilion Royal Museum. Also left behind are many famous 19th century estates and plantations that you can vist and tour.

The Beaches:

The beaches in St. Lucia are fantastic for sunbathing, swimming, and snorkeling. The beaches are all open for the public to use, even though most resorts along the beach do not make the beach assessable to the general public. The southwest coast of St. Lucia is more sheltered and offers very safe options for swimming. Rodney Bay is St. Lucia’s main swimming area, but there are other great beaches to be found at Marigot Bay, as well as on Pigeon Island.

Great Activities and Excursions Available in St. Lucia

St. Lucia is an outdoor enthusiast dream, offering a multitude of land and water excursions and activities, such as:

  • Hiking
  • Rain Forest Canopy Tours
  • Ziplining
  • Diving and Snorkeling
  • Horse Riding
  • Golf
  • Sailing
  • Cycling
  • Hot Sulphur Springs
  • World Class Deep Sea Fishing
Many activities and excursions are available either at your resort, or can be booked on site at your resort. Which leads to my next topic:

World Class Resort Options:

St. Lucia offers a huge choice of luxury accommodations to celebrate your honeymoon at. There are great world-class all-inclusive resorts, as well as, smaller boutique style hotels and Inns. There are even luxury villas that include your own private butler and personal chef. Some of my favorites are:

The Sandals Grande St. Lucian
The Ladera
The Jade Mountain
The Sandals Halcyon Resort and Spa
The Sandals Regency Resort and Spa
The Sugar Resort and Spa

Cuisine and Night Life

Most of the best restaurants and nightlife are going to be located in either Castries, or Rodney Bay. These two cities are the main hubs of commerce, cuisine and nightlife in St. Lucia, not counting the cuisine and entertainment available at your resort. Usually there is enough going on at the resorts at night to keep you busy for your entire stay.  For example, Sandals in St. Lucia, provides excellent night life and entertainment for all of its guests.

The Best Time to Travel

St. Lucia really is a great place to go for your honeymoon any time of the year, but if you want to increase your chances of great weather every day, then you will want to travel between Mid November and March, with more rain falling in the other months. Most of the time, unless there is severe weather, you could get maybe 1 hour of rain during the afternoon, and then it quickly clears up and is sunny again.

Safety and Security

St. Lucia has a low crime rate, but using “common travel sense” should be followed, just as if you were visiting a new city in the U.S or somewhere else. Follow these “travel common sense” tips to give your self a safe and secure trip:

1. Stick to well-lit, populated areas
2. Do not wear expensive jewelry out in public (off resort)
3. Do not carry large sums of money on you
4. Always keep your valuables in your hotel safe
5. Keep all travel documents and passports in your safe as well

Approximate Travel Times From U.S and Canada

From Miami: 3 hours and 40 minutes
From Toronto 5 hours and 15 Minutes
From New York: 4 hours and 40 minutes
From West Coast: 10 hours and 30 minutes with connecting flights.

How Much?

St. Lucia offers a wide range of great resort options for everyone’s budget. The cost of your honeymoon to St. Lucia will vary depending on the time of year, length of stay, type of resort and current airfare costs. A good starting point for a trip to St. Lucia for a basic room at an all inclusive resort, with airfare, would be around $4,500 and can go all the way up to $10,000 or more, for a really fancy suite with butler service. Again, the price you find may be more or less, depending on the time of year, specials and sales available, and airfare prices

Note: I would not recommend going to St. Lucia for less than 7 nights, unless you live in the South Eastern part of the U.S, because of the long travel time.
